"The Pearce's" (Abbey and Mel)
Dear Joyce:
This letter is long overdue, but nonetheless I am sending it now. Where do I start to express to you my heartfelt appreciation and thank you, for allowing me the privilege of calling myself “Mom” to Abbey and Mel - affectionately referred to as my ‘Girls’! This statement will probably get me into trouble with my ‘human’ girl - Shannon - but she knows that she is really number 1 with me!
Having never been introduced to the world of Labs prior to the arrival of Abbey almost four years ago, I soon came to know this breed intimately - or at least, what Abbey initially taught me. What I learned was that Labrador Retrievers are extremely intelligent, extremely loving, extremely food motivated, extremely energetic and can quickly run the household to suit themselves very well! And, what could be better than one Labrador puppy in a house ..... well, you showed me that - two could be double the pleasure and double the fun! And indeed that is what we now have with Mel’s arrival about one year after Abbey.
Abbey being yellow and Mel being black are complete individuals in all aspects of their being and who would have known that the color of the lab seems to provide predictors of characteristics! Having become involved with the Labrador Retriever Club of Manitoba I have enjoyed many of the conversations from others as they lovingly share their stories, in particular about their ‘black’ dog! The BlackDog certainly does seem to possess a whole skill set for getting into mischief while maintaining that innocence about themselves and angelic personalities.
My ‘Girls’ have and continue, to provide me with hours of pleasure - be it through their antics, their performances or by just pretending to be ‘lap dogs’. Abbey - who is lovingly referred to as Go-Go- Abbey is always on the move or in motion, and with only a soft ‘hi Ab’ you can get her into a whole bum-wag that is oozing with delight and anticipation of a belly rub. Mel on the other hand, who has a bit of a stand-offish nature, is happier to fall asleep on the couch beside you in the evening while watching TV and just has to have you in sight to feel secure.
A couple of my favorite things to watch are the girls playing together outside - trying to out do each other for attention and then breaking into that all-time favorite the bum-tuck run! The other for sure, is with Mel on a winter walk, when she discovers a snow bank to run up and them throw herself head first into a puppies version of skiing down the hill - completely burying her head under the snow and then motoring herself around half under and half on-top of the snow (all the time with her head buried) until she runs out of steam, only to emerge as a snow-dog! Or when she just runs and throws herself in to the snow and creates a dog’s version of a snow-angel.
The continue to delight and entertain all who are willing to pay attention. They have quickly and completely become members of the family and I cannot imagine my life without them.
I know that you believe that my life would be more complete with a complete ‘set’ of Labs with the addition of a chocolate..... who knows - maybe one day!
